Escaping the daily grind

There are plenty of reasons for hiking's increasing popularity.  First of all, you have the health benefits: hiking is a great way to improve your fitness and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases - plus exercise and fresh air are also great for the soul.

Hiking also brings you closer to nature while letting you escape the stress of everyday life. Each step takes you further from the daily grind while offering a change of scene and a chance to truly relax the mind.

It's also a sustainable hobby, especially when you decide to keep things local or opt to get to the trailhead using public transport.

One of the best things is you can also tailor your routes to be as individual as you are.  Regardless of whether you prefer longer, more challenging trips that test your limits, or if you want something family-friendly with a bite to eat thrown in along the way, hiking is there for everyone, including absolute beginners.

No matter where you are

One of the most awesome things about hiking is that you can enjoy it the world over. Whether you live in a place or are just visiting, the best way to explore the surroundings is on foot. So why not lace up those boots and get out there!

Gear and supplies when hiking

Once you have settled on your route and know about the conditions, you'll need to start thinking about what to pack for the trip. The wrong clothes and footwear, or a simple lack of provisions can quickly spoil the day (or worse).

Hiking Routes on Outdooractive

Most of our route suggestions under the category “Hiking Routes“ lead through more predictable terrain, i.e. well-trodden hiking trails through forests and across fields or well-surfaced paths in the mountains.

Our aim is to ensure that you have fun while keeping you safe, and although you don't generally need to be a fitness fanatic, some routes are definitely more demanding than others, so it is worth reading the routes in detail and knowing your own abilities. It is also important that you know about the terrain and weather conditions on the day so you can make the choice of trip that is right for you.

JimS - Brixham, Berry Head - 21/03/2024 by Ken

Great walk! We did an extended version of this fromBattery Gardens, just to the NW of Brixham, and back. Brilliant views and scenery, and lots of varied flora and fauna if you take the time to look. We were lucky, and saw a porpoise whilst we were at Berry Head, and a guy there let us watch it though his monster telescope. Domtake plenty of water, though. The Guardhouse Cafe in the fort area at Berry Head is great, too. They are very coeliac friendly, and the milk shakes are the best we've ever had. A local recommended it for breakfast, too and she was right; excellent!
